Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson once explained what it really takes to appear natural.

Before his interview on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, he studied past episodes to see how long Stewart usually let guests speak before jumping in with a joke. He noticed the show often referenced recent news, so he caught up on headlines. Then he rehearsed his key points until they were sharp and tight enough to land.

It worked. He looked relaxed and effortless. But it wasn’t effortless at all.

After the show, people said he seemed so natural on stage.

Later, reflecting on the experience, Tyson said, “They have no f***ing idea how much time I put in to look natural.”

That’s the point.

What feels smooth in the moment often comes from hours of preparation.

If you want to look natural on stage, don’t aim to wing it well. Prepare better than anyone expects.
