THE MIRROR YOU NEED
Andrea Pacini —
Swimmer Michael Phelps won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics. But in the years leading up to it, one of his most important tools wasn’t in the pool – it was video review.
Phelps and his coach, Bob Bowman, often analysed footage of his races and training sessions. They looked for every detail: his start, his turns, his stroke timing.
Even when he was winning, they still asked, “Where’s the gap?”
That feedback loop gave him something essential: awareness.
That’s how change begins.
Your version of that mirror might be recording yourself and watching it back. Or asking someone you trust to review your presentation with you.
You need to know where you stand and where you want to go.
Feedback, even when uncomfortable, reveals the distance between the two.
It’s easy to ignore that distance. But once you acknowledge it, you can begin developing a plan to close it.
You begin to act with purpose – not just working hard, but working on the right things.
You don’t have to be perfect. But you do have to be honest with yourself.
Awareness gives you clarity. Clarity gives you direction. And that’s how change becomes possible.
