When I interviewed bestselling business author, Daniel Pink, he shared a lesson that stayed with him long after law school.
In a class on International Business Transactions, his professor – Harold Hongju Koh – offered this advice: “Focus on the core idea – find the one per cent that matters.”
If you could grasp and explain that, you understood the topic. You owned it.
That lesson goes beyond law. It’s for anyone who needs to explain an idea, sell a product, lead a team or teach something new.
When you present, look for the one per cent that matters most – then build from there.
If your audience remembers only one thing, make sure it’s the right thing.
So here’s the question: What’s the one per cent that drives your message? What’s the essential truth you want others to take away?
Find that, and your message will land.
Timeless Presenter, my new book on the principles of communication that never expire, will be released soon.
